Tom Carey was born in Los Angeles. His father, Harry Carey, Jr., and his grandfathers, Harry Carey and Paul Fix, appear in some of the most iconic American films (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Red River, The Searchers, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Bad Seed, Giant). Tom studied acting with Jack Garfein and Stella Adler, and moved to NYC in 1977. He appears in several feature films and TV shows, among them Plaza Suite, The Day of the Locust, and The Blue Knight. In the 1970s and 80s he fronted for the punk rock band, “The Beeks,” and was literary assistant to poets James Schuyler and John Ashbery. He earned a degree in Spanish at Columbia University. In 1988 he became a Franciscan brother of the society of St. Francis, an Anglican religious order. He served for thirteen years at St. Elizabeth’s Friary in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 2003. While living in Brooklyn, he ran a theater program for inner city kids for six years, and taught poetry in New York City’s public schools for a decade. He also worked with youth and young adults at Episcopal parishes in Richmond Hill and Astoria, Queens. His book of poems Desire (Painted Leaf Press 1997) was a Lambda Literary Award finalist. He currently lives at a Franciscan Friary in Los Angeles, California, where he is the vicar an Episcopal Church near downtown L.A

This is a truly beautiful book on so many levels. Artfully constructed, the story moves backward and forward in time and combines three distinct narrative voices from Mexican artist Miguel Rodriguez Lozano's tumultuous life, while also shedding a long overdue and beautifully rendered light on a fascinating period in Mexican history when gay life first came out of the shadows, albeit tentatively, in post-revolutionary Mexico. Lozano knew Rivera, Siquieros, Tamayo, Kahlo, as well as Salvador Novo and countless others, and Carey's depiction of their interactions and struggles as artists is endlessly intriguing, humorous and revelatory. As an artist who lived an openly gay life in challenging circumstances, we are witness to not only the vicissitudes of forging relationships in such a hostile social environment, but the very real danger that lands Lozano in prison, and the sadly less-than-heroic effort by his colleagues to advocate for his release during a time when even the most liberal of intellectuals would not stand up for a gay friend. Carey's handling of Lozano's inner life is nothing less than masterful as the painter reminisces from his cell about the intense love affairs that inspired and fed his art, and that far from causing him regret, remind him of the beauty and greatness of his vision, the liberation inherent in art, and the very real unique and sometimes almost overwhelming bond that is gay love. The book itself becomes a sort of masterpiece of the artist's mind in Carey's capable hands. Carey's understanding of the finer points of an artist's process was also continually impressive as he discusses color and form and then skillfully relates it to the narrative. A real hidden gem, this is a book that deserves a wide readership and should be considered for any syllabus covering modern gay lit.Product details

Carey's novel brings me to a place in my self where I encounter my "Small Crimes". It is fun and funny but also leads me to look at myself in a new and more honest way. This novel set before I was born, about an obscure Mexican pointer unjustly imprisoned because of his own obsessions should, leads me to my own inner follies. Carey's story, that like all living tales, leads me deeper into myself.
