Cyrus the Great, also known as Cyrus the Elder, was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire. Under his rule, the empire embraced all the previous civilized states of the ancient Near East,[9] expanded vastly and eventually conquered most of Southwest Asia and much of Central Asia and the Caucasus. From the Mediterranean Sea and Hellespont in the west to the Indus River in the east, Cyrus the Great created the largest empire the world had yet seen. His regal titles in full were The Great King, King of Persia, King of Anshan, King of Media, King of Babylon, King of Sumer and Akkad, and King of the Four Corners of the World. He also proclaimed what has been identified by scholars and archaeologists to be the oldest known declaration of human rights, which was transcribed onto the Cyrus Cylinder sometime between 539 and 530 BC.

I'm not sure why everyone else gave 5 stars. For one of the great figures of history, this book is very thin - less than 100 pages, and says flat out that it is not a real history, but simply a retelling of Herodotus and Xenophon's accounts - ancient histories more known for their exaggerated tales than real history. with no leavening of modern historians and scholars' learning. surely someone in the last 2000 years has something to add to these accounts. The book has no table of contents, no introduction, no footnotes, no index, no biography of the author,no bibliography- none of the hallmarks of a normal history book, and none of the aids that help it to be used as a reference. the typesetting is crowded and hard to read, and it is lacking in sufficient maps or other illustrations to help the reader understand the context of the text. There also is little to no formatting or use of whitespace. There also is no copyright or library of congress notation. The book appears to be a bootleg. Amazon's book quality has declined - this is the second time i got a bootleg version of the a real book from amazon when i thought i'd get the real book . This version is not worth it.

Cyrus the Great eBook Jacob Abbott Reviews

As a love of the Book of Esther, I wanted to learn more about the King and their children. This is a good book concerning the Kings.
Loved it. I Can't get enough ancient history. There's always something new to learn about these old characters. Can't wait to read the next one.
okay book
A great book it goes along with the bible
1/3 of the book is devoted to personalities other than Cyrus. At the head of each paragraph, there are one, two or three paragraph-summaries, which I found VERY distracting and difficult to gain momentum reading. Also, the author's writing style is discombobulated; there is no flow. Overall, I found it very tiresome.
So with a headline like that; why the 3 stars? The book originally written in the late 1800's (my guess since it states that the author was famous in the 19th century). The language used is of-course the language of that time which can be very wordy and can present a challenge to navigate. The font size is probably #6 or 8 which is also difficult to read unless you are a teenager. The information is good, but the writing style and font size are why I only would give it 3 stars.
I'll have to find another book on this topic. While the author seems indeed to have a strong grasp of the topic, his ability to effectively communicate it in writing is something else. Many sentences are nearly a paragraph long. It reminds me of Gibbons' history of the decline and fall of the Roman empire in that regard, but so bad that just reading the first chapter was enough. It is one maze of thought after another. The reader must trudge through each sentence and then reconstruct it into clear thought. His editor let him down.
